The Broward County Sheriff's Office, or BSO, is composed of 6,300 employees, including approximately 3,190 certified deputies and approximately 600 firefighters. 

The BSO budget is about $700 million annually. In 2007, longtime Sheriff Ken Jenne pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges and tax evasion. Jenne was sentenced to 1 year and 1 day in federal prison.

In October 2007, Florida Governor Charlie Crist appointed Al Lamberti permanent Sheriff of Broward County. He was re-elected to the post in November 2008. Since January 2013 the current Sheriff of Broward County, Florida Democrat Scott Israel, is who defeated the incumbent Republican Sheriff Al Lamberti in a heated election.
